The Diploma of Business (DipBus) has been developed as a nested course in the BBus. It will consist of the first year of the Bachelor of Business program and encompasses the eight initial core units. Students would have a good foundation in business through the DipBus and could decide to complete their BBus later if desired.

Course Overview

VIT’s Diploma of Business (DipBus) is a post-graduate course at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 5.

Graduates at this level will have technical and theoretical knowledge and concepts, with depth in some areas within a field of work and learning.Graduates of a Higher Education Diploma will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills with personal responsibility and autonomy in performing complex technical operations with responsibility for own outputs in relation to broad parameters for quantity and quality.

part-time study (only available for non-Visa students) and how many units are undertaken each term.

Exit Qualifications
To provide flexibility, VIT provides two options. Successful students are eligible to:
  • Continue on and study their Bachelor of Business (Accounting, Human Resource Management, International Business Management, Marketing, Business Technology – 24 units with 6 units in one specialisation and 2 capstone units)
  • Exit with a Diploma of Business (8 units)
Students will be eligible to offset some units based upon Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) credits, however they must complete at least 50% of their units at VIT to qualify for a particular VIT award.

Exit Qualification Rule

To graduate with a Diploma of Business, you need to have completed 48 credit points. If you have studied related units and/or have extensive professional, supervisory or managerial experience, you may be eligible to receive advanced standing through recognition of prior learning/credit transfer (RPL/CT).

The course structure provides students a broad-based areas such as undergraduate's curriculum with a set of core units in Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business Management, Marketing, and Business Technology.This should help them in their future studies and professional careers

Core Unit Structure

The Business Management Concept unit will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the organisational environment in which businesses operate. You will explore the various ways organisations are designed and structured, and understand the importance of different functional and operational areas within them. The unit will also focus on helping you understand the primary economic, legal, regulatory, political, technological, social, and cultural aspects of the business environment. By the end of this unit, you will have a solid foundation in business fundamentals, empowering you to navigate the complexities of the organisational landscape and make informed decisions for your future success.

In this introductory unit on Economics, students will delve into the intricacies of economic theory and its practical implications. The curriculum is meticulously designed to bridge the gap between abstract economic concepts and their real-world applications, providing students with the analytical skills necessary to interpret and forecast economic trends.

Students will start by learning about the foundational economic systems that govern societies, delving into how resources are allocated in different environments and the implications of these systems on global and local scales. The unit will explore the contrasting mechanisms of command economies versus market economies, and how mixed economic systems attempt to combine the best of both worlds.

Building on this foundation, the unit will then dissect the core principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics. In microeconomics, students will scrutinize the behaviour of individual consumers and firms, the determinants of prices in different market conditions, and the effects of consumer choice and production decisions on market outcomes.

In this unit, you will explore the impact of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) on organisations, accounting practices, risk management, data analysis, and communication efficiency. You will cover various aspects, including how databases, networks, the internet, blockchain, and transaction processing influence business practices. You will examine topics such as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in accounting, business intelligence, big data utilisation, and auditing. The unit will also examine how ICT supports risk identification, reporting, and management, and enhances the efficiency of systems and processes within an organisation. You will explore data analysis using database management systems, data analytics, and visualization tools. The unit will also address the importance of ICT processes and controls, data integrity, security, and suggest improvements that can be implemented.

The objective of this unit is to provide you with introductory accounting concepts, issues, and problems. You will not only explore the core concepts and techniques of financial reporting and analysis but also examine the crucial ethical, regulatory, and sustainability dimensions associated with the accounting profession. The unit initially uses a worksheet approach and then introduces you to debits and credits and the use of journals and ledger accounts to record the accounting cycle. In this unit, you will learn to record economic transactions in the accounting records of different types of businesses. You will acquire the ability to produce reports such as a Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and a Statement of Cash flows. You will be able to learn how to identify fundamental elements of accounting and relate them to business transactions to read, analyse, and prepare financial statements.

This unit provides you with a solid foundation in the principles, concepts, and strategies of modern marketing. Its specifically designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the ever-changing landscape of marketing. You will explore the fundamental aspects of marketing such as market research, consumer behaviour, segmentation, targeting, positioning, branding, product development, pricing, distribution, promotion, and marketing ethics. The emphasis will be on understanding the strategic application of the marketing mix to achieve organizational objectives. Theoretical concepts are combined with practical applications, encouraging you to think critically and analytically about marketing challenges and opportunities.

The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the world of finance. You will embark on a comprehensive journey to gain a foundational understanding of the principles and concepts that underpin the field of finance. Throughout this unit, you will be introduced to various key topics, including financial markets, investment analysis, risk management, and capital budgeting. You will explore the fundamental principles of finance, such as understanding the time value of money, valuing stocks and bonds, and calculating and interpreting financial ratios. You will gain insight into the role of financial institutions and regulatory bodies in the financial system. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, you will develop essential skills in financial decision-making, critical analysis, and strategic planning, including, but not limited to:

  • Financial aspects of decision-making such as applying capital budgeting techniques in the evaluation of capital investment decisions
  • Dealing with uncertainty in decision-making
  • Dividend policy
  • Business valuations
  • Explaining income, asset-based and market evaluation approaches

Diploma of Business: Typically, students would complete eight core units in Year 1 for the BBus.These core units also constitute the DipBus.Providing students with the opportunity to progress into the BBus.
ADMISSION

Course entry requirements

VIT has designed the course to enable students to commence studies, taking full account of their prior learning and experience, while considering the course requirements to help ensure the success of the students.

18 years or older at commencement of course.

Domestic Students

Year 12 Applicants:

a. English: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 applicants (transfers, mature age, pathway students)

a. Must submit a Personal Statement to be considered during the selection process which includes details on motivation for study, work experience, community experience, academic performance, languages other than English and other relevant information.

b. Must demonstrate their competence in English language to an equivalent level of Year 12 English (e.g. a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL). This could be accomplished through a range of methods including:

  • Successful completion of a degree or diploma in Australia
  • Completion of Certificate IV in EAL
  • Satisfactorily completed ELICOS or EAP to the appropriate level (equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall and no band less than 5.5)
  • Complete English language bridging course through a recognised English language centre
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one semester of study in Australia in a tertiary course (satisfactory for this purpose would mean that the applicant has completed 50% or more of the semester load)
  • Completion of schooling from the following countries where English is the official language: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States of America
  • In exceptional cases, the Executive Dean or delegate, can consider an English entry requirement waiver, other than the above criteria, on a case-by-case basis as deemed fit.

International Students

Successful completion of Australian Year 12 equivalent and an IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) or equivalent.

Entry into the BBus generally requires the successful completion of 12 years of schooling to the level of higher secondary education.

The Diploma of Business (DipBus) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study

The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and overseas.

Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.

A full course load of 24 units is expected to take 1 year of full time study. However, you may be eligible for recognised prior learning (RPL) based on your education and work experience.

All Australian accredited degrees are approved by the Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency.  So, the VIT DipBus is academically equivalent to any other institution in Australia and around the world.

Not all units are offered at any time. You may choose elective units from those scheduled in the timetable in a particular study period.

Financial aid may be available depending on your circumstances and where you are resident.

Domestic students may be eligible for Fee-HELP from the Government and could be eligible for a VIT Scholarship

Eligible students may receive up to a maximum of 72 credit points (twelve units) for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), with a maximum of 18 credit points (three units) to offset specialisation units. Each RPL application is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
